10/07/2022 • Local assembly capacity, energy consultancy and remanufacturing

At SEW-EURODRIVE A/S, we are always looking to find new ways to reduce our carbon footprint. That’s why we decided to start a process with the consultancy Hansen & Ersbøll Agenda and the industry association BITVA called Business Plan Earth, where we focused on developing our own sustainable strategy.

After two intense months of mapping risks, sustainable business opportunities and developing specific strategies, it was time to present our new sustainable business plan in Børsen. Here, together with the other participants in the course, we launched our ambition and associated aspirations, and received valuable input from both Brian Mikkelsen, managing director at Dansk Erhverv, Stig Irving Olsen, associate professor at DTU Sustain, and Lotte Hansen, director and partner at Hansen & Ersbøll Agenda.

Our sustainable ambitions

Our overall corporate ambition is that we will increase our focus on sustainability. We will do this by strengthening our decentralized business model and thereby reducing our own CO2 footprint. At the same time, we want to help our customers reduce their CO2 footprint through energy advice and a focus on extending the lifespan of their existing transmission solutions. We have an ambition for our sustainable profile to be a competitive parameter in relation to both existing and potential new customers.

In order to fulfill this ambition, we have set ourselves three ambitious goals:

1. During 2022, we will increase our local assembly capacity so that in Denmark we can assemble 70% of the gears we sell and thus reduce our CO2 footprint compared to having ready-assembled units delivered from Germany.

2. Through energy advice and guidance in choosing the most energy-efficient gear, we will help our customers reduce their CO2 footprint.

3. We will help our customers reduce their CO2 footprint by extending the life of their SEW products through preventive maintenance, remanufacturing and retrofit.

Next step

But of course the journey does not end here. In the nearest future we will work hard to define our CO2 footprint at the company level as well as at the product level in cooperation with our German head office and our colleagues worldwide.

"We will work on calculating the climate footprint of our products, so we can put documentation behind our words. For us, it's about being able to offer the most energy-efficient products, which can ultimately help our customers reduce their CO2 footprint.”

Morten Holmstrøm, CEO, SEW-EURODRIVE A/S.

03/15/2022 • Eighteen gear motors from SEW-EURODRIVE, which control the pallet system at Carlsberg's high-bay warehouse in Fredericia, are being renovated in order to maintain operational safety in the most environmentally friendly way.

At Carlsberg's high-bay warehouse in Fredericia, gear motors from SEW-EURODRIVE move up to 1,600 pallets per hour. The gear motors control the 40-meter high and 110-meter long cranes, which carry pallets in all directions - up, down, to the right and to the left.

In order to maintain the same operational reliability as the last 13 years, where the gear motors have been running with high reliability, Carlsberg, SEW-EURODRIVE and SSI Schäfer, who operate and maintain the system, have decided jointly that all gear motors must be reviewed and renovated from head to toe.

More specifically the y-axis gear motors, which move pallets up and down, are going to be completely renovated one by one. The gear motors have been running since 2008 with only two oil changes, so now it's time to give them the big turn.

Environmentally friendly extension of the system's service life

Carlsberg choosing to renovate the existing gear motors rather than replacing them with new ones has the advantage that it does not involve many new parts having to be manufactured. The main part of the repair consists of time in the workshop, which makes it an environmentally friendly extension of the system’s service life.

SEW-EURODRIVE is responsible for dismantling the units, transporting them to their own workshop in Vejle, renovating them and finally reassembling them on the cranes. Assembly and disassembly takes place in collaboration between SEW-EURODRIVE and SSI Schäfer.

The renovation process

In order to avoid downtime, SSI Schäfer has an extra y-axis gear motor in stock, which is shipped to SEW's workshop in Vejle, where it’s going to be totally renovated. This unit is placed on the high-bay warehouse’s pallet system, which itself drives the unit into the specific pallet space, which is closest to the location of the gear motor on the crane. An empty pallet is also driven into the area around the gear motor, which is located at a height of six meters. After this, a work platform will be set up at the pallet sites so that work can be done in the area.

The existing gear motor is dismantled on the crane and placed on the empty pallet in the shelf. The newly renovated unit is then mounted on the crane. All tools and crew leave the crane and the "old" gear motor is driven out by the plant's newly renovated gear motor so that it can be safely loaded on a truck.

This process is repeated and thus, a gear motor is renovated every two weeks. Disassembly and assembly of the gear motors takes approximately five hours every time.

Safety is essential for all parties involved - Carlsberg, SSI Schäfer and SEW-EURODRIVE - therefore only approved lifting gear, harnesses and tools, which are intended for this type of task at height, are used.

<%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" pageEncoding="UTF-8"%> New hygienic drives made from stainless steel | News | SEW-EURODRIVE

04/04/2022 • SEW EURODRIVE adds stainless steel servo gearmotors to its solutions and product portfolio. The PSH..CM2H.. series expands the range of uses in applications in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. These are three industries with extremely stringent hygiene and cleanability requirements.

Calls for an incredibly short “time to market” are growing, especially in special machine design. Current developments have highlighted how quickly pressure on mechanical engineering can grow when production equipment is needed within very short periods of time to manufacture food or medicines. SEW EURODRIVE is therefore expanding its solutions portfolio to include stainless steel servomotors and stainless steel servo gearmotors. In doing so, the Bruchsal-based company is playing its part in ensuring machinery and systems can be created using its modular system, even for applications with stringent hygiene requirements. As a result, the precise hygienic drives can be delivered faster than is standard on the market.

The stainless steel servo gearmotors in the PSH..CM2H.. series have a hygienic design. They meet the strict guidelines of the European Hygienic Engineering Design Group (EHEDG) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The drives have a smooth surface with a roughness of less than 0.8 µm and have no corners or edges.

In terms of durability and being easy to clean, the compact units, consisting of synchronous servomotor and planetary gear unit, have been designed in such a way that they can withstand high-pressure cleaning at high temperatures – even with chemical cleaning agents. The drive units are resistant to steam and corrosive cleansing agents – two of the typical requirements, especially for CIP and SIP (Clean in Place and Sterilization in Place) processes. The new stainless steel servo gearmotors from SEW EURODRIVE have a degree of protection of IP69K. They are part of the MOVI-C® modular automation system and cover five sizes with different lengths and nominal torques of 1.0 to 103.6 Nm, along with four different gear ratios per gear unit. Various feedback systems can be supplied for dynamic and reliable positioning. As such, the stainless steel servo gearmotors from SEW EURODRIVE’s PSH..CM2H.. series not only deliver the performance required for systems in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries, but they can also be flexibly integrated into existing machine designs.
